BİNBİRDİREK SARNICI | CISTERN OF PHILOXENOS

Binbirdirek Sarnıcı, Yerebatan Sarnıcı’ndan sonra İstanbul’daki ikinci büyük su haznesi olan sarnıçtır. Eski Bizans kaynaklarına göre IV. yüzyılda Konstantin (Constantinus) zamanında yaptırılmıştır. Binbirdirek Sarnıcı’nın zamanla kuruması nedeniyle burası 16. yüzyıldan itibaren atölye olarak kullanılmıştır. 3584 metre kare büyüklüğünde olan Binbirdirek Sarnıcı’nın içinde bulunan 224 orijinal sütunundan 212 tanesi günümüze ulaşmıştır.

Sarnıçtaki sütunlar, üst üste bindirilmiş iki gövdeden meydana gelmekte, üstlerinde hiçbir işleme bulunmayan kesik piramit biçiminde başlıklar bulunmaktadır. Sütun gövdelerine işlenmiş Yunan harflerinin sarnıcın yapımında çalışan ve sütunları işleyen taşçıların işaretleri olduğu bilinmektedir. İstanbul’un kültür ve sanat alanında önemli bir yer tutan sarnıç günlük müze olarak ziyarete açıktır.

BİNBİRDİREK SARNICI | CISTERN OF PHILOXENOS

Discover the fascinating Binbirdirek Cistern, the second-largest ancient water reservoir in Istanbul after the world-famous Basilica Cistern. According to Byzantine sources, this impressive structure was built in the 4th century, during the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great.

Over the centuries, as the cistern gradually dried up, it found a new purpose and was used as a workshop from the 16th century onwards. Covering an area of 3,584 square meters, Binbirdirek Cistern originally featured 224 marble columns, 212 of which still stand proudly today.

Each column consists of two stacked shafts and is topped with simple, unadorned pyramid-shaped capitals. If you look closely, you can spot Greek letters carved into the columns—these are believed to be the personal marks of the ancient stonemasons who built this magnificent structure.

Today, the Binbirdirek Cistern continues to play an important role in Istanbul’s cultural and artistic scene, hosting exhibitions, events, and daily visitors who come to experience its serene, mystical atmosphere.
